How Can severe Cold Along With Nasal Congestion Be Treated?

My husband has been battleing a cold since the end of October, he went to the doctor in November, they gave him an antiobotic and it worked a little. Lately he has gotten worse, he is always blowing his nose, coughing phlem up and he looks terrible. I am afraid that this could be going into something worse, don t you think he should see a doctor.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
Your husband started with cold since October....was given antibiotic but got the symptoms exaggarated after few days. He has excessive nasal secretions with phlegm ( indicating involvement of respiratory tract.)
I would suggest-
-Taking anticold pill over the counter ( having anti allergic &decongestant property like Synarest twice a day after food Add cough syrup 2 spoons twice -thrice a day with earm water.
-have light diet ,avoid cold, sour ,spicy or fried things.Drink plenty of warm water.
-Warm water gargles with salt twice a day & warm vapor inhalation helps a lot.
- Avoid known allergens... exposure to dust, strong smell, smoke, fumes ,extreme tempratures .
*If there is no relief or there is aggravation, fever, the nasal discharge or sputum is yellowish or there is weezing , difficulty in breathing...you need antibiotic . You should consult your family physician for suitable additions to your treatment.
Thanks.
